MPO’s Winter’s Awakening begins in the atmospheric colours of autumn, with moody and evocative works that usher us gently toward the winter season. The program opens with Meyer’s Overture No. 1, followed by Wagner’s majestic Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral and Sibelius’s evocative Karelia Suite.

After intermission, the mood turns festive and celebratory. Vivaldi’s radiant Gloria, performed with the MPO Singers, takes centre stage, followed by joyful seasonal works by Rutter and Lauridsen. The concert concludes with a joyful medley of festive tunes, bringing the evening to a warm and celebratory close.

Highlights include movements from Bach’s majestic Orchestral Suite No. 3, Handel’s spirited “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba,” and Dvořák’s beloved Humoresque. The MPO Singers join the orchestra for Fauré’s serene and deeply moving Cantique de Jean Racine, while Piazzolla’s haunting Oblivion adds a touch of tango-inspired passion and reflection.
